This is the first project I've done in a while, though I have been practising on and off. For me, the foundational hand is much harder than other styles. I think because every mistake is more noticeable. So, if the foundational hand can be mastered, other styles (with the exception of Copperplate) are to write...just my personal opinion.

Oh...there is one mistake in the spelling...jeesh!! I left it since I thought it could be read as dialect. I haven't mastered correcting my mistakes. I usually start all over again. But even with all the mistakes in this project, I'm satisfied with the results!

A New Dove

This is for my aunt. It has the names of all her children and grandchildren. The gray areas are actually tiny dots. I felt the picture needed two tones and this seems to have done the trick. Making the dots nearly drove me mad, but it has a nice effect.

If I had the time to do it differently, I changed the direction of a couple of the names, but what's done is done!

I can't recall which page the actual image is on, but it is under the flags and banners in the costumes.

This horse is for my uncle. All of his nieces and nephews are in the horse.

Hmmm...it is not all calligraphy as it should be, but not bad for a beginner. I have actually made a monumental mistake in this design. One of the names is in the wrong family...yikes! I put a cousin in the wrong family. I have made another one, but I really like this one more. I need to add a border as well.

I've never had a problem admitting that I am a terrible artist. In this design, I turned the page upside down to make some of the swirls which means that the symmetry is wrong in some parts. So much to learn...so little time!!

This calligraphic angel is for my grandmother. Of course, she's not going to be pleased with me when she sees her name spelled wrong...argh!! I hope she'll have a chuckle at the mistake.

Practice with Reed Pen

Yes....pathetic, but even the most skilled started out with an uneven hand. I am using brown paper, Indian ink and a reed pen. Why reed? Because it is what I have on hand. I will be getting nibs for my birthday, but in the meantime, I couldn't wait to begin, so reed it was! It takes practice just to shape the tip. But keeping in mind that calligraphers use reed still today, I feel it is quite an accomplishment.

No...it is not getting better, but I was experimenting with different letter styles.

More practice. L's are extremely difficult to make. I think because it is vertical, a steady hand is absolutely necessary. This is Batarde script - very pretty, when written correctly.

This is foundational hand script, which is easiest for most to write. I continued letters on to the next line eventhough the word wasn't finished. It is time consuming to measure lines, so I cheated. I have so much to learn about spacing, but I think it is coming along nicely!
